How can I show the featured image of a product until a variant is selected in the free Craft theme?

How can I show the featured image of a product until a variant is selected in the free Craft theme? There are responses to this question with older themes, but not the new ones. 

The variant images for my store are of not the actual product, only color swatches. My suppliers do not offer photos of every color variant. Attached is an example of how they look on the product page.
