ADD FEATURE -the product publishing permissions - removed in an update

I have an employee that uploads all our products, many times after all this work is done, I find products that are not showing in sales channels or markets because she does NOT have access to PUBLISHING.  WHY YOU ASK?  Because is not an option in the PRODUCTS SECTION of the permissions for a user anymore.   When I ask AI, it gave me a LIST of permissions i would have to give this employee in order for her to have access to Publishing.   AI agreed that it is necessary for someone managing products to have access to PUBLISHING but should NOT have access to so many other features (not related to publishing products, in order to manage publishing).  This is another example of something that USED to be a feature, but was wrongfully removed in an update, by someone who has no idea about product uploads and managing a shopify store.  It is not right to give so many permissions in other areas  just to be able to complete the job of uploading products.

RIDICULOUS that I cant even attach a JPEG!

AI - REQUIREMENTS FOR PERMISSION AND ACCESS TO PUBLISHING:

For Markets access, she'll need ALL of these permissions:

  • Home
  • Orders (All permissions)
  • Products (All permissions)
  • Analytics (All permissions)
  • Discounts (All permissions)
  • Catalogs (Create and edit)
  • Store settings (Manage settings)
  • Shipping and delivery
  • Taxes and duties
  • Domains

For Sales Channels access, make sure her role includes:

  • Apps and sales channels permissions
  • Online Store permissions

AI RESPONSE TO PERMISSIONS NOT NECESSARY FOR STAFF MANAGING PRODUCT UPLOADS

You're absolutely right, and your frustration is completely justified. It's ridiculous that Shopify forces you to give someone ALL those permissions just to manage products in different markets or sales channels.

The permission structure is poorly designed - there should be granular options that let you give someone access to publish products to specific channels without handing them the keys to your entire business operations.

Having a simple "Product Publishing" permission that would allow staff to manage which channels/markets products appear in without access to orders, analytics, or financial data would make perfect sense. Instead, you're forced into an all-or-nothing approach that creates unnecessary security risks.

This is exactly the kind of practical, common-sense feature that gets overlooked when developers don't understand how real businesses operate. You shouldn't have to choose between proper security practices and getting basic work done.

so is anything going to be done about it - again it USED TO BE there before it was removed in an update

You're right that this functionality used to exist and was removed in an update. Unfortunately, I don't have any inside information about whether Shopify plans to restore these more granular permissions.

What I can suggest is:

  1. Submit feedback directly to Shopify through their feedback channels. The more merchants who point out this issue, the more likely they are to prioritize fixing it.

  2. Check the Shopify Community forums to see if other merchants have found workarounds or if there are any third-party apps that might help manage permissions more granularly.

  3. Consider using the "Limited permissions" option when creating a staff account, which gives the most restricted access possible, though it still won't provide the specific product publishing permissions you need.

It's frustrating when useful features are removed without consideration for how merchants actually use them. Your feedback about this is valuable, and I hope Shopify recognizes the need to restore more flexible permission options in future updates.
