Hi Shopify Team and Fellow Merchants,
I’d like to request a feature that allows merchants to assign multiple images to specific variants of a product and automatically hide unrelated images when a variant is selected. This functionality is critical for stores with large catalogs and complex variant setups.
Use Case: I manage multiple stores, and many of my products have hundreds or even thousands of variants. For example:
- A single product might have over 2,000 variants, each with unique images.
- Customers should only see images relevant to the selected variant (e.g., color, size, or style) to avoid confusion and improve the shopping experience.
Currently, Shopify doesn’t natively support this feature, and we have to rely on third-party apps or create separate listings for each variant. However:
- Using apps adds extra costs and complexity across multiple stores.
- Creating separate listings for each variant is impractical for products with thousands of variants and disrupts the customer experience.
Current Limitations:
- Native combined listings with variant-specific images are only available to Shopify Plus merchants.
- For non-Plus merchants, there’s no built-in way to assign multiple images to a variant and hide unrelated images.
Proposed Solution:
- Allow merchants to assign multiple images to each variant directly in the Shopify admin.
- Automatically hide images that are not linked to the selected variant on the storefront.
- Make this feature available to all Shopify plans, not just Shopify Plus.
Business Impact: This feature would:
- Save time and reduce costs by eliminating the need for third-party apps or workarounds.
- Improve the customer experience by showing only relevant images for the selected variant.
- Make Shopify more scalable for merchants with large catalogs and complex variant setups.
Why This Matters: For stores with thousands of variants, creating separate listings for each variant is not feasible. A native solution for managing variant-specific images would streamline operations and enhance the shopping experience for customers.
