Feedback for your online store from the community
Hi Shopify Team and Fellow Merchants,
I’d like to request a feature that allows merchants to assign multiple images to specific variants of a product and automatically hide unrelated images when a variant is selected. This functionality is critical for stores with large catalogs and complex variant setups.
Use Case: I manage multiple stores, and many of my products have hundreds or even thousands of variants. For example:
Currently, Shopify doesn’t natively support this feature, and we have to rely on third-party apps or create separate listings for each variant. However:
Current Limitations:
Proposed Solution:
Business Impact: This feature would:
Why This Matters: For stores with thousands of variants, creating separate listings for each variant is not feasible. A native solution for managing variant-specific images would streamline operations and enhance the shopping experience for customers.

Thank you for considering this feature!
I was also surprised when I noticed Shopify doesn't have this feature natively and it is possible to assign only single image to variants. It seems to be very old problem and some themes natively supporting it with alt tags and some are supporting this by sorting images in order where images of variant coming after assigned variant image. And there are also many apps which are solving this problem if you search "variant images" you will see them all.
For transparency I am also an app developer and I decided to built a solution for this problem and I built the app called "Rubik Variant Images".
I hope Shopify will build this feature natively one day but until then you may give a chance to one of the apps.
