Is my homepage design clear and engaging enough for new visitors?

Hi all,

I’ve recently redesigned my Shopify store homepage to highlight a hero image with a call-to-action button and a rotating banner showcasing promotions. My bounce rate, however, remains high at 65%, which makes me wonder if visitors are disengaged or confused by the layout.

Can someone help.

Hi @DracoStones88

It sounds like you’ve put a lot of effort into your Shopify homepage redesign, which is great! From what you’ve described, the hero image and call-to-action (CTA) button, as well as the rotating banner, are strong elements for grabbing attention. However, if your bounce rate is still high at 65%, there might be a few things causing visitors to leave without exploring further.

Here are my thoughts based on what could be happening and what you might want to address:

  1. Clarity of Purpose: When visitors land on your homepage, they should immediately understand what your store is about. Is your hero image visually appealing and relevant to your brand? And does the CTA clearly communicate what action they should take (e.g., "Shop Now," "Explore Our Collection")? If your messaging isn’t clear or compelling, visitors might lose interest.

  2. Rotating Banners: These can be tricky. While they showcase promotions, sometimes users don’t stay long enough to see all the slides, or the constant movement can be distracting. Consider whether the banners are truly adding value or if a static, well-designed promotion section might be better.

  3. Page Speed: A slow-loading homepage can be a silent killer of engagement. Visitors don’t stick around if it takes too long to load, especially with large hero images or rotating banners. Make sure your images are optimized for fast loading, and check your site speed using tools like Google PageSpeed Insights.

  4. Navigation: Is your homepage easy to navigate? Visitors should be able to spot your menu, search bar, and product categories immediately. If they have to dig for what they’re looking for, they’ll leave.

  5. Content Overload: Sometimes less is more. If your homepage feels cluttered with too many elements (like text, banners, or products), visitors might feel overwhelmed. A clean, minimalist design can often perform better by drawing attention to the most important parts.

  6. Engaging Visuals: Does your hero image evoke emotion or interest? People are drawn to visuals that resonate with them. Make sure your imagery aligns with your brand and target audience.

  7. Analytics: Look deeper into your analytics to figure out where users are dropping off. Are they not scrolling past the hero image? Are they clicking on the CTA but leaving soon after? This data can guide specific improvements.

From my perspective, it’s worth testing small adjustments to see what works. For example:

  • Replace the rotating banner with a static, focused offer.
  • Test different CTA text to see if it drives more clicks.
  • Simplify the layout to focus on 2-3 key sections instead of too many.

Finally, don’t be discouraged! High bounce rates are common, and it takes time to find what resonates with your audience. You’ve already taken a big step by redesigning your homepage, so keep tweaking and testing.

If you need any other assistance, I am willing to help.

Best regards,
Daisy
