Dear Shopify Community,

I am running a mug/apparel store and I've been having problems with it. I started it mid-December 2020 and have spent a total of around $300 on ads. I'm brand new to e-commerce and have finally figured out how Facebook ads really work and now my ads are doing well (CTRs are 3% and better). Customers go onto my store, click around, sometimes add to cart, but I haven't gotten a single sale.

My story:

I started this website with friends originally selling mugs from buying designs on Etsy and putting them on custom mugs. We've now expanded our store, adapting to our ad feedback to Canadian and American themed tote bags, leggings, and now sweaters. Please help me with advice on how to convert. Thank you everyone for the help! P.S. When I run general ads on our products, the majority of clicks are ages 45-65+, but mostly 65+.

Hi

I'm Richard - CRO Expert at PageFly Landing Page Builder. Congrats on your new store. I would like to have some comments on your store. I think improving the design and layout of your store will be helpful for the conversion rate.

The header: the header contains the main menu and the search function. They are essential features of your online store; visitors will need them to navigate your site and search for the products. The main menu on your header is hidden by default, and the search feature is just an icon. Please consider making them more effective by showing the whole main menu and the full search bar on the header; also, you can enable the sticky header. It will follow customers' view, and they won't miss any information on the header anymore.

Homepage

Banner: you have three slides on the banner with good background images. But they do not have any CTAs yet, adding more buttons/CTAs to the banner. It can be useful to redirect customers to the page that you prepare for the conversion step.

RichardNguyen_1-1610100220477.png

The product list: you are showing a list of many products. But the first things that customers will see on the list are only the product images. The product title and the price only show up when users hover over the product image. Since your market target is mostly above 45+ years old, you will need to show as much information as possible on the pages. Many low-tech customers won't understand your site's features if you don't have enough information to guide them.

RichardNguyen_2-1610100220657.png

Testimonials section: the Testimonial is useful to boost your store reputation. It is essential to keep your reputation high; customers will feel more convinced when reading good reviews about your store.

Product page

Product image: you have many good product images on the product pages. They include photos from different angles, which give customers a better view of the cups. But the stock photos with a white background like this may not be enough. You can consider taking and showing more "real" images with background. The product images which are taken by you can prove the origin and quality of your product.

Color Swatches: many products in your store have more than one color variant. Instead of showing the default variant selector, you can replace it with the Color Swatches. This feature can improve the store's look and professionalism.

RichardNguyen_3-1610100220671.png

Shipping date: many customers will need to check the delivery date before making any decisions. It would help if you showed the nearest possible shipping date on the product page.

Refund, Return, or other policies: not only should you show the delivery date, but you also need to add additional sections like Refund, Return, or other policies. With enough information on the product page, it will keep the customers on this page and prevent them from looking for that information on other pages.

That is some of my feedback. Please hit Like or Solution if you find that feedback useful.

Cheer!

Thanks for your response! I forgot to mention a very small percentage of my customers actually go to the homepage, so changing the "mugs" description wouldn't really change the conversions of my website. My ads have links that direct traffic to specific product pages, not the homepage. As for my CPC, depending on who I'm targeting or if I'm using detailed targeting, my CPM changes for every adset. Some have $10 per 1000 impressions, some have $6 per 1000 impressions, so I'm not sure why CPC would be important? I'm running four ads right now for around $10 each (why would I invest so much in ads if I have no conversions?). Thank you again for taking the time to respond!

Yes I do know what a sales funnel is. Using Facebook pixel, I just started retargeting my ads today using people who've visited certain webpages on my store. I created 1% lookalike audiences for these custom audiences and today was my first day where I started retargeting. Just today, I've had three active carts and one checking out from 240 sessions, but no one converted.

Hello @bristyr, Hope you are well. For an owner with very little experience, you have done a pretty good job. I must say your aesthetic eye is very keen.

I understand how it can be frustrating to be doing everything right but still not getting your traffic converted to sales. You may find comfort in knowing that you're not the only one on that boat. Millions of Shopify store owners are facing the same problem. This is not because you are necessarily doing something wrong, but rather because Sales is an organic process, involving people getting to know you, visiting your brand, looking at your products, comparing them with others, and finally making the decision to purchase from you. So this takes some time, during which you have to hold on tight. But, you can't be just passively waiting for sales to grow, so I would recommend you look at these tips and see which ones you can use: You have great faith in your online shop, but why aren’t visitors converting?

Another Thing you could consider: Not all traffic is good traffic.

Traffic will only have any chance of converting to sales if they are being generated by the right consumer. If your product is for females under the age of 30, but your ads are being viewed by males over 50, that is a lot of traffic, but it will never convert to sales. So, before you spend on targeting, a good idea is to have a simple Google Trends search, that will tell you who is looking for the products you search, what is their age, gender, and location. Then you can put forward some really targeted ads that are bound to generate clicks.

Here are some other suggestions for you:

  • Banner

Your banner looks very good and matches your theme and product. Consider, however, adding a Shop Now button to your banner, which will take you directly to the relevant product page.

  • Chatbot:

You will be surprised how much you can benefit from a chatbot. It can collect your necessary customer data, help you analyze which stuffs are trending or in more demand, and overall solve your problems by answering common questions so you won't have to.

  • Product Images

Because this is an online store and people cannot touch and feel your products before buying them, they rely heavily on product images, which is why the images have to look top-notch.

  • Product Descriptions

People always don’t know everything about a product beforehand. When they see a product or show interest in a product, they want to know more about the different aspects and specifications of the product. If product descriptions fail to provide people with enough information about the product and fail to create an appeal for the product, the visitors won’t buy the product. So, provide elaborate and appealing product descriptions to every product to increase your sales.

  • Testimonials

Customers read user reviews more than they read product descriptions. If they find that 50 other people have liked your product and have purchased from you, it helps your credibility and they feel safer buying from you. So try to add some reviews of your products and services to your homepage.

  • About Us

People tend to buy more from people they can easily relate to. If you share your journey, your goals, and your aspirations with your customers, it will be easier for people to connect with you. If you can create an emotional connection with your visitors, people are sure to buy products from you.

Hope this helps you. If you find it useful, leave a like to let me know! Happy Selling! Thank you and the Very Best of Luck to you!

Hello @bristyr, I hope you are doing well! here are some suggestions:

- Add a call to action button on the banner image in the first fold of the home page.

- You need to make the product page professional. Design it in a more organized & professional way.

- On the homepage after the slider images, display the collection you have with thumbnail images.

- Add social media links in the footer.

- After the collection, give product recommendations by personalizing the shopping experience of the customers. Add trending, new, recently viewed products on the home page. For this, you can install AiTrillion and simply enable the product recommendations.

- Add a LiveChat to make sure you never lose any of your customers.

- Showcase reviews on the home page.

Setup announcement bars or timers to promote your offers on the store.  AiTrillion has pre-designed templates of announcement bar, timer & sales motivator bars.

- Add Instagram shop & feed on the homepage.

- Add a discount popup. Entice customers with discount codes.

Setup a reward program for giving points and let customers redeem on their next purchase.

These features will help you to maximize customer engagement in your store and reduce the bounce rate. These are essential tools to entice customers and it also helps in increasing the conversion & retention rate.

If you would like to implement the above features/ customer engagement or marketing tools in your store. I would recommend you to try out the all in one Shopify app AiTrillion. I am sure you will find it useful.

Hope this Helps!
