I am curious as to why Shopify requires my SSN to set up payments for the product I sell.  Can anyone justify the requirement?

Hi, @silverbysteve.

Thank you for reaching out!

Shopify's requirement for your Social Security Number (SSN) when setting up payments is primarily due to legal and regulatory obligations related to financial transactions. Here are a few reasons why Shopify may require your SSN:

1. Identity Verification: As an online platform facilitating financial transactions, Shopify needs to verify the identity of its merchants. Requesting your SSN helps confirm your identity and ensure that you are a legitimate business owner.

2. Tax Reporting and Compliance: Shopify may also require your SSN for tax reporting purposes. When you reach certain thresholds in sales, Shopify is obligated to report your earnings to tax authorities. Your SSN helps ensure accurate reporting and compliance with tax regulations.

It's important to note that Shopify has security measures in place to protect your personal information. We have strict data protection policies and employ encryption technologies to safeguard sensitive data.

If you have concerns about providing your SSN, reviewing Shopify's privacy policy and terms of service is recommended to understand how your information will be handled and protected.
