Add to cart javascript check for custom field filled in

Hi, I want to ensure my custom field is filled in before adding the product to the cart.

I have tried adding required within the input tags but it doesn't work (I've read others saying the same). Where can I edit the javascript to check the custom field is populated before adding to cart?
