All translations gone after changing default language despite checking with customer support

I was checking with customer support if I will lose my manual translations when changing the default language from German to English and he said twice that it won't happen as the system recognizes the new default language. Now all translations are gone. That's fucked up!! 

I saved the back-up of the theme and the deleted language but the import doesn't work. Any hack?
