Alternate Checkout Layout Using URL Query

I need to be able to show an alternate layout for our checkout on demand, using the standard URL "view" query (ex: ?view=alternate).  I do this all the time with pages within the website, and Shopify allows you to create alternate checkout templates in the code editor, but I can't get the alternate `checkout.liquid` layout to show in the browser.  How do you utilize alternate layout at checkout?

You can't apply an alternative layout or template to checkout. It doesn't work.

Yeah...  I guess I'm wondering why Shopify allows you to make alternate checkout templates, but won't let you use them.  I know this IS Shopify and all, but it doesn't make sense.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
