Are metafield descriptions accessible via liquid?

Our custom theme displays product metafields on product pages, with a heading for each metafield, and I've hardcoded the heading for each one.  On the backend (in .../admin/settings/custom_data/product/metafields/...) I notice the product metafields have a "Description" attribute that would be nice to use for the headings, but I can't see how to access it in the theme code.  Looking at the liquid docs it looks like it only gives me the key for a given metafield and its value (along with the type metadata).  Is there any way to access the description for each metafield too?

Well, the account I was responding to is gone now, so I'll assume the answer to my question is "no, metafield descriptions are not accessible via liquid and serve no particular purpose beyond the admin UI"
