Change the host of my website from thrid party to Shopify

Hi community!

I am desperate for some technical help!

About 10 years ago, I asked a friend to help me set up my website (www.jeffmalo.com), and he chose to work with a business called Funio. The website was very minimal, and old school, it was not a good representation of my business, so about a year and a half ago, I decided to switch to Shopify where I have better control of the content and the look and feel. I am 80% sure what I did was follow the path of "connect an existing domain to Shopify" from Funio instead of a domain transfer, I can't remember the details. However, now I realize I am paying Shopify almost 500 dollars a year for my website, but also paying ~$400 a year for Funio. I want to know if it's possible to completely move everything to Shopify so I can get rid of Funio. I don't know if I can just stop Funio, I'm afraid my website will go down if I do that, I don't know how exactly it's set up.
Does anyone have an idea of what I can do? Thanks in advance !

Hi @JeffMalo 👋 you need to make sure you own the domain, which is a separate matter you should do your due diligence through internet research.

In some cases when using a "hosting" or "hosting domain" service etc that serve may own the domain.

Or there can be ~60 day transfer lockout period where you unable to transfer a domain such as after a registration/?renewal?/transfer.

Get your ducks in a row and have your business property properly documented.

When you know it's your domain need to pursue a domain transfer to a domain registrar or shopify.

It doesn't necessarily need to be shopify so you don't have all your eggs in one basket.

Hi PaulNewton,

Thanks for the reply! I did a WHOIS search on GoDaddy and it shows the following info:

Does this mean I don't own the domain? If yes how can I own it? Thanks!

I think you're caught in a situation where your domain is still being managed through Funio, while your website content and hosting are on Shopify.  Hmm you can try this guide: Log into Funio to confirm if it’s hosting your website or only managing the domain. To fully transition, transfer your domain to Shopify under Settings > Domains, using an authorization code from Funio. Alternatively, update your DNS settings in Funio and the CNAME to shops.myshopify.com. This ensures Shopify handles your website while Funio only manages the domain, reducing costs. After verifying your website works seamlessly with Shopify, cancel any hosting services with Funio. Ensure everything functions properly before making final changes to avoid downtime. Shopify support can assist with any technical difficulties.
