I have to sell items from India in US market. While I am able to install apps to convert my currency from INR to USD on all other pages, It changes back to INR on Checkout page. I also have chat with them but they said as shopify manage checkout page so no app is allowed to change currency at checkout, only shopify payments can do it, and shopify payment is not available in india, please suggest how can this conversion be achieved on Shopify Checkout page without using "Shopify Payments"

Hi, @Shadowart.

Thanks for reaching out about your concerns.

It sounds like you've spoken to our internal support team about this matter, who has confirmed for you that Shopify Payments is required to showcase a different currency on checkout, is that correct?

If that's the case, I'd like to reiterate what was perhaps already said by our support team to you, that Shopify Payments is indeed a requirement for stores wanting to allow customers to checkout in their local currency. There isn't a workaround for this I'm afraid, this is currently a limitation of our Shopify Markets feature as explained in this guide. And while stores have the option to select a different store currency to their payout currency, again this is also a specific feature that is available for our Shopify Payments users, as per this guide.

I understand how important this feature is and can see how beneficial it'll be to expand this feature for stores using other gateways too, outside of Shopify Payments. I'll pass on your feedback to our internal development team for consideration, so that they're aware of the concerns that you've shared with us here via our Forums. While we can't guarantee if or when features are implemented, you can check our Changelog here for the most recent updates to our platform.

In the meantime, we encourage users to explore a range of currency converter apps on our Shopify App Store here. As you're already aware however, these apps will only display a different currency to customers up until checkout, so customers are still required to checkout in the store's default currency if Shopify Payments isn't active on the store. This is the closest alternative available at this stage for stores not on Shopify Payments however, so I recommend exploring this option further.

Can we create our own checkout page or use our payment gateway provider checkout page for our shopify website ?

@Shadowart

If you're comfortable with coding and would like to create a custom checkout experience for customers via your own payment provider, feel free to do so.

Keep in mind though that even through a custom app or the use of a third-party payment provider, which sounds like something that you're looking to implement, customers will still process their payment in your store's default currency. Shopify Payments, at this stage, is a hard requirement to allow customers to checkout in their local currency, as explained in our developer document here too.

I encountered the same issue with Shopify. I transitioned from my custom-coded website under the impression that Shopify is the ideal platform for e-commerce. However, the process of creating a Shopify store consumed a considerable amount of my time, effort, and money. Regrettably, I was unaware of Shopify's limitations, particularly its lack of export friendliness for Indian businesses. It would have been helpful if these constraints were clearly outlined before purchasing plans or expensive themes. Shopify should inquire if Indian sellers intend to export goods and then inform them of any potential inefficiencies. This experience has been extremely disappointing and reflects poorly on Shopify's reputation as a leading e-commerce platform.
