Does product metafield data change affect past sales order entries?

Is product metafield data displayed during sales order entry permanently stored or is it always a lookup to the metafield?

Example: I warranty a product for 3 years (product.years. integer = 3) and communicate that with the product at sales order. Later, I change the metafield integer content from 3 to 5.

After that change, would retrieving the sales order display a 3 or 5 year warranty period?

Is this for a metafield that is stored on the product itself? If you went to look at the product value later on it would only show the current state. A product metafield has no connection to an order.

What I'm missing from your context is how that value is carried through to the order. 

If you need that kind of order data permanence look to have the value stored on the Order itself as a metafield, or as a cart attribute (or line item property).

Now if I have missed the mark on what you're doing please post back and throw some more details at me.
