Does theme optimization affect publishing process on ecommerce platforms?

Do Shopify themes go through a special process before publishing?

Do we do the optimizations Shopify does before publishing the theme, before sending the theme? If we do, we will have hosted both the theme and the compressed version of the theme on Shopify servers for nothing.
