Domain Transfer to Shopify from Hostgator (DownTime)

My domain for my Shopify store is currently on HostGator.  I want to transfer the domain to Shopify.  HostGator will give me an auth code so I can do this, but unfortunately, HostGator says my site can have up to 7 days of down time while the domain is transferred.

Is there a way to transfer my domain with 0 down time?

Or am I stuck on HostGator forever?

Technically, transferring a domain between registrars and pointing a domain to a hosting platform are two separate tasks. To avoid downtime, I recommend the following steps:

First, build your site on Shopify. Then, update your domain’s DNS settings at HostGator to point to Shopify’s servers.

Once that’s done and your site is live on Shopify, you can initiate the domain transfer to Shopify’s registrar using the auth code from HostGator.

By following this approach, your website should experience no downtime during the process.

• Keep Your Domain Active on HostGator – Do not transfer the domain immediately. Instead, update your domain's DNS settings on HostGator to point to Shopify’s servers.

  • A Record: 23.227.38.65
  • CNAME (www): shops.myshopify.com

• Verify Shopify Connection – Once updated, your domain will start directing traffic to Shopify while still being managed by HostGator.

• Initiate the Transfer – After confirming that your site works on Shopify, you can request a transfer using the auth code from HostGator. Since the DNS is already set up, your website won’t experience downtime during the transfer.

• Complete Transfer Process – The transfer itself can take a few days, but since DNS settings were updated beforehand, your site remains live throughout the process.
