My client bought a second domain through Shopify and needs it to forward to a specific page on their current store. From what I'm gathering on the forums, this isn't possible, correct?
Before I tell my client to transfer the domain to a third party registrar, because they make it real easy, is there another way in Shopify?

You can edit the DNS and change the CNAME record to point to the URL of the page you want to direct it to. By default, Shopify-purchased domains have the CNAME record shops.myshopify.com - you can simply change this to the desired URL (eg. www.domain.com/page/).
As for the A Record, which uses an IP, I'm not sure if it's possible to point this to another URL. However, I've seen some stores point their A Record back to the original CNAME domain and that seems to work. In theory, since the original www.domain.com is now pointing to another part of the store with the new CNAME record, then it may be able to redirect the A Record to the same URL.
Example of Shopify-purchased domain records:
mystore.com - A Record: 23.227.38.65
www.mystore.com - CNAME: shops.myshopify.com
Can try changing DNS records to:
mystore.com - A Record: www.mystore.com
www.mystore.com - CNAME: www.mystore.com/pages/
Since purchased domains can't be transferred within 60 days of purchase, I'd recommend trying this suggestion out. While I can confirm the CNAME (www.domain.com) can be pointed to a different URL, I can't confirm if the A Record (domain.com) can be pointed without being able to try this out in your client's store. If this method doesn't work, then transferring the domain to another provider after 60 days may be the best solution for your client.

No. Neither of those edits are effective. Whether I try to change the A Record or CNAME Record I get a message that says, "Unable to add DNS record: Value must be a valid FQDN."

If our Technical team isn't able to assist with this, then I believe transferring the domain to a different third-party domain provider may be the best option.

Shopify Support confirmed that a third-party transfer is the only way to do what my client needs with their domain. But there is a hold on the domain for 60 days that can RESET if any of the information associated with the domain is changed.
I hope other shopify customers somehow find this thread before purchasing a shopify-managed domain.
