GA4 not registering discount code in Shopify

Hi everyone,

I have recently setup GA4 with my shopify store through the Google & Youtube App.

I don't have too much data to work with at the moment but it seems to be largely working correctly.

One thing I did notice is that the revenue I get from GA4 is more than the revenue shopify reports.

After some investigation I found out that this is due to GA4 not tracking the 10% sign up discount code that we have setup in the store.
How would I go about setting up GA4 or Shopify so that any discount codes can be tracked appropriately?

Thanks!

I've had the same issue and have been back and forth with Shopify and Google Support. I'm caught in a loop of both of them saying it's the other's fault!
Basically any discount is not recorded on the order and the discount amount is not taken out of the order.

So if you place an:

  1. order subTotal for $100
  2. Discount of -$10 (at order level)
  3. New Sub-Total = $90
  4. Tax = $9
  5. Shipping = $2

GA4 will report:

  1. Revenue $100 (not taking discounts at the order level out)
  2. Tax $9
  3. Shipping $2

Shopify Support recommends opening a ticket with Google, which I have done 3x time and resulted in the same loop of the conversation going no-where.

What we can recommend at this point is reaching back out to Google (always through your Google & YouTube channel by clicking on Get support) to explain this and sharing our tickets with them to show the information that Caleb shared with you in the previous email to demonstrate what we can see from our end, as well as this one to show that this is now beyond our scope of support.

The ramifications of this are as follows:

  1. Google Ads from the App is over reporting Revenue
  2. Google Ads is incorrectly optimizing for uses based on revenue and ROAS targets are calculation incorrectly
  3. Google Analytics from the App is over reporting Revenue
  4. Google Analytics does not have the Discount $ so it can not be fixed in configurations or looker calculations

Possible Solution:

  1. Big Daddy Google Steps up and Fixes this in their App
  2. Disable the Tracking Portion of the App and Manually Add with Custom Web-Pixels and/or Liquid Theme updates
