Handheld Terminals / Scanners for order picking / IM

Hi all,

I'm looking to improve efficiency in the picking & packing side of what is currently a small operation. 

currently mobile phones are being used with Easy Scan application to pick orders and manage inventory (to some extent) 

ultimately the plan is to move to a WMS, but in the interim period I’m looking to increase efficiency. 

Currently we have Easy Scan installed on several mobile phone handsets that are used exclusively for order fulfilment and some basic inventory management, I.e. pointing a picker to a fixed location to enable a pick, and locating stock in fixed locations. 

whilst this is okay, the reading of barcodes with the phones camera is incredibly slow. 

Are there any applications that enable the use of Handheld Terminals or laser scanners / barcode readers within shopify? 

Also, is there application available that replicates the actions of a WMS/IMS, even at the most basic level?

any advice or suggestions welcome!
