Help SEO says to 'Avoid internal links with dynamic URL parameters'. How can I remove these?
I have used multiple SEO Optimisation tools and this warning keeps coming up. I have optimsed my page to now 86% so I am doing well I think but the final pieces are more technical and I am not sure where to fix them. Can anyone help with this?
The details of the error are:
Hey Zii_Lizard,
Heddy from Gameball here.
Sounds super frustrating given how close you are! I'll try my best to address each issue 🙂
Dynamic URL parameters usually appear as things like ?id=123 at the end of your URLs. They can be created by filters, search queries, or session IDs on your site. Here’s how to minimize or remove them:
Canonical Tags: If removing dynamic URLs isn’t possible (e.g., they’re needed for functionality), make sure you’re using canonical tags. This tells search engines the preferred version of the page, avoiding duplication.
Internal Linking: Try to update your internal links to point directly to the clean URLs without parameters. This might mean going through your site's navigation, breadcrumbs, or any manually added links.
URL Rewriting: If you're comfortable with a bit of coding or have access to a developer, URL rewriting rules can be set up to remove or replace parameters in URLs. This is done via your web server or within your Shopify theme if possible.
Third-Party Tools: Consider using SEO tools that can help identify where these dynamic URLs are being generated so you can address them more specifically.
If the same anchor text is pointing to different pages, it can confuse search engines. Here’s how to tackle this:
-Contextual Links: Make sure your anchor texts are descriptive and context-specific. If you’ve got multiple links saying “click here,” for example, it’s worth changing some of those to more descriptive text.
-Audit Your Content: Use a content audit tool to find where these duplicates occur and adjust accordingly.
Links without anchor text might be hidden or within images without alt tags. Here’s how to find them:
-Inspect Your Code: Sometimes, inspecting the page’s HTML can reveal links that aren’t visible in the content. Look for <a> tags without accompanying text.
-Use SEO Tools: Tools like Screaming Frog or Sitebulb can crawl your site and list these links, making them easier to find and fix.
If you're stuck, reaching out to a developer or someone with technical SEO expertise might be worth it. But it sounds like you’re well on your way! Keep going, and you’ll have that last 14% sorted in no time.
