How can I add a section to the theme without losing customized content?

Hello, I use an app called "webrex" to add breadscrumbs to the page. The app developer said my theme can not add section to the page, as it's necessiary to add new sections for breadscuumbs, he said I have to update the theme to 2.0 version? Is he right? If so How to update the theme? Another problem is that I have custimized the theme I using now, I don't want to lose the customized content. Do you have any suggestions?
