How can I build custom functionality into a product page?

Hi all

I was wondering on where i would need to get started if i want to build custom functionality into the product page. I need functionality that lets me load external data, transform the data and present it as a customized product. do i need to create a private or custom app for that? or can inject code into the product page?

I'm experienced with coding but not with the shopify ecosystem, so not quite sure where to start looking.
