I have multiple products that have scent selections. For one, Beard Balm, there are five scents to choose from. The variants in Shopify are just size, color, etc and unable to customize the name. I have tried the metafields but that doesn't seem to work either. After using multiple other platforms, I don't get why this is unavailable being a basic feature. However, at this point can anyone direct me to how this could be done?

Hi @UnspokenRealms,
Thank you for reaching out to the Community! I'm happy to provide some guidance with creating variants, to ensure this gets resolved.
To share some insight, variants are not limited to the default options (i.e size, color, material, etc) seen within the Shopify admin. When creating a product, you can enter the option name for your variants, that customers can select from. We have a great Adding Variants document that touches on this further, that I recommend checking out.
To achieve this you can:
In the Options section of the Add product page, check This product has options, like size or color.
In Option Name, enter a name for the option (i.e Scent) and click the mouse cursor anywhere outside of the Option Name box. Do not hit enter, as this will not save your option name.
In Option values, enter each option value in a separate field, for example Small, Medium, Large. Customers see these option values when they choose a variant.
If your variants differ in more than one way, then click Add another option. You can have up to 3 options for each product.
Please let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

We're having a similar issue but we have some legacy products that allowed us to create and use "custom" variant names in the past. If I duplicate a listing the custom variant names are allowed but if I try to add a new listing I can not create variant names outside of "size, color, etc. Unacceptable....... - David
I found a solution that worked here on YouTube without using an app. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r2PFajL42RQ&ab_channel=AndrewfromEcomExperts I was "bad" and didn't dup the theme first but was thrilled when I saw my options. Still a bit of a pain but I hope it works for you too.
Now I just need to figure out how to move it above the description. Best of Luck!!
Thank you! That does look like it will work short-term. Upon doing more research our store template ("Venture") is no longer available so there's little hope it will be fixed in the future. We'll be looking for a new store template. Thanks again for your help! -David

Thank you, Blair! The "secret sauce" was NOT hitting enter. If I type in my custom variant and simply click out side of the text box, it saved it. You made my day! -David
