How can I effectively manage pre-orders using basic Shopify features?

I want to accept pre-orders for an item that will ship in 2-3 months. I see that there are separate apps for pre-orders but they're pretty expensive. Can't I just use the existing base Shopify features to sell an item and just not ship it until ready? I haven't sold anything on Shopify yet so I don't understand what would stop me from doing this. Let me know. Thanks!
