How can I improve my site speed score from 33?

Hello!

My site store is a 33, and this is after I have deleted all unnecessary applications and taken off crazy images that take up space. Is there someone that could do a test on it for me and let me know what I could do? I think my load speed is fine, so it's not the biggest issue in the world. It's just that its 33 is worrying me. I was also thinking maybe migrating to 2.0 might be the best decision but isn't that just changing from liquid to JSON? I'm sure a dev will know the answers right away....

Thanks!!

Hello @spolesak

Where are you getting the score(shopify admin, external service) and which number are you are you talking about:

performance "speed" measurement, or the relative store ranking?

https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/online-store/store-speed/speed-report#your-ranking

Ranking is versus other stores basically comparative performance for similar stores.

Is there someone that could do a test on it for me and let me know what I could do?

Without a website url that's going to be tough for others to do even as a courtesy, provide a publicly accessible url.

I was also thinking maybe migrating to 2.0 might be the best decision but isn't that just changing from liquid to JSON? I'm sure a dev will know the answers right away....

Changing from a vintage theme to an OS2.0 theme may not guarantee a performance increase, you have to just test thoroughly with the desired themes.

Either way web performance optimization is a MASSIVE topic with no silver bullets as it's more a business-discipline than it is just knobs&dials ,  where either you need to:

  • research the existing discussions here on forums in the context of shopify, or on the wider web for web development discussions , then:
    1. implement the techniques talked
    2. or get more specific with questions on performance
    3. repeat
  • or use one of the apps/services available
  • or hire a consult/developer

And then maintain any such changes as a process and business policy.

As always , thanks Paul, you are a great resource in this crazy world. So much to learn, the ranking I was referring to was just the one Shopify has on the home page.

I will do some more research. Thanks!

For just the ranking, the keyword is relative which you can only really get clear context on by doing competitor research and testing their site speeds yourself.

If your shopify "rank" is even marginally better than average, and you also rank higher in SERPs you just need to invest at a level that maintains that lead either through  SEO,marketing and not necessarily only technical performance.

If your shopify "rank" is worse than average, and you also rank lower in SERPs you may be in for a serious amount of pain as you have to hit all areas SEO , marketing, performance.

If your contesting for first page SERPs, then outpacing competitors through performance could be a tie breaker ... but often is a longterm process.

I've heard some updates have changed the whole UI UX pattern and different methods are being used for speed optimization. Can you let me know on that?

I'm comfortable using wordpress for most of my clients sites. In most of the cases media files are a major cause of slowing down a webpage. I recommend using webpage images or compressed versions.

A page speed score of 33 is concerning and can affect the user experience on your site. You can start by optimizing your images and reducing the size of your page elements to improve load times. You can also use tools like GTmetrix or Google PageSpeed Insights to analyze your website and receive specific recommendations on how to improve your score.

Regarding migrating to Shopify 2.0, it's not just a change from Liquid to JSON, but it's a major upgrade to the platform's architecture that provides improved performance and additional capabilities. I would recommend reaching out to a Shopify Expert or developer to get a better understanding of the migration process and if it's the right fit for your store.

Let me know if there's anything else I can help with!

I noticed that in WordPress there are certain plugins that helps to increase. Is there any plugins for shopify as well as I'm seriously facing speed issues for my site?
