How can I increase numbers of search results on a page?

Where and how can I increase the number of products that are shown on a search results screen?

Documentation says there is a limit of 50 products that can be shown on a screen, but our search results only show 16.

How can this be increased and where can I change it?

Thanks for any insight.  Just can't seem to find it.
