How can I make only certain products purchasable to certain customers?

Good afternoon everyone, community

I have a problem to solve on my Shopify. I need to make some products in my ecommerce not purchasable - but still visible - to certain categories of customers.

Is it possible to do this? If so, how?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hi, @RickDo. I appreciate you sharing all of that informaton! It was definitely helpful.

I believe the app I shared in my last response would be the best option to help you with this as you can restrict access to your product pages based on whether your customers have completed the training. There are a couple of ways you can set this up within the app, including using customer tags, customer email addresses, etc. You can find more information on how to use this app here.

There are some other suggestions I have to help you accomplish what you described as well. The first is to use Pages in addition to setting up Products. You can use your product pages for your customers to add their items to their carts, and you can use pages to display the products in a treatment and the training associated with it, like an overview of everything that comes with that treatment. This guide on products and this guide on pages can help explain what I mean. If you were to do this you can create two pages within the Pages section of your Shopify admin, one to display the information and products for your first treament and another for your second treatment. This would allow all of your customers to see everything you offer, but only those with access to the product pages would be able to purchase those products. If you need to, you can also create separate page templates for your treatment overview pages so that you can customize each page individually using your theme editor. The following guides can help you do this:

Another suggestion I have is to consider using the Shopify Bundles app. Using this app you can group products that are commonly purchased together. I was thinking it could be helpful to create a bundle of all the products for your first treatment, and another bundle for all of the products for your second treatment. This would make it easier for your customers to see which products they should purchase together. You can also add incentives like discounts for purchasing all of the products for one treatment. Doing this might encourage customers to purchase more at one time rather than purchasing one product at a time. You can find more information about this app here if you're interested.

I'm happy to help if you have more questions or need clarification on anything!

Hi, @RickDo. I'm happy to look into this with you! I just have a couple of questions to make sure I'm giving you helpful advice going forward.

  • Can you tell me more about these products and why you'd like them to only be available to certain customers?
  • What process would you like customers to go through to see and purchase your products?

To do something like this I'd typically recommend using an app like Locksmith by Lightward. This app gives you the option to allow or restrict access to certain products and pages based on conditions you set up. For example, you can limit which customers have access to certain products by customer tag, customer location, customers with the password, etc. I definitely recommend trying this to start. If you tell me more about your products and store I may be able to suggest more options as well.

Please let me know if you have any questions in the meantime!

Greetings @Erin ! First of all, thank you for your kind help. Much appreciated.

Let me briefly explain why I need to fulfill these needs.

We are a beauty and cosmetics company. Our business model is to sell trainings and workshops on innovative beauty treatments, exclusively to beauticians in Italy. Each training we sell has specific products that must be used to perform the treatment correctly.

So we teach the treatment and then sell the products for that treatment, through our e-commerce, which is private, only to people who have done the training with us. So far we were only selling one treatment, from September we will have two treatments (so on the e-commerce we will have products for the first treatment and for the second treatment).

These treatments can be integrated with each other, but they are taught in two separate workshops, with different prices.

I need all the people accessing the e-commerce to be able to see the products for each treatment, because this can lead to potential indirect sales and curiosity for the first or second treatment-in case a person has only purchased one treatment with us.

Our goal, of course, is to sell both treatments to all of our potential customers, and this strategy of "see everything, but you can only buy products related to the training you have already accomplished" can help.

I don't know if I have explained myself well, in which case I am available for any concerns or questions. I thank you for your response and advice, now I will also look at the app 🙂

I wish you a wonderful day,
Rick
