How to change background color of individual sections?

It seems this can only done by custom css. I don't understand why Shopify won't let uses do such a simple thing without having to do custom coding.

A theme cannot be all things to all merchants.

Understanding is not possible if you don't read the manual for the software that is critical to your business and use it's existing features:

i.e.  background-color: red !important;
