Re: Store "Cant provide a secure connection"

How to fix 'can't provide a secure connection' issue on my domain?

Hey guys I'd love to get some feedback to help fix my problem. My shopify store has been running just fine for a while now but two days ago any time you try going to my website it says, "can't provide a secure connection." I have dove deep into this and am at the point where I think the reason is the domain. (My domain is from google domains) I have read a lot about what your IP address should be on your A record and mine doesn't match-up. I have disconnected the domain and reconnected it and it still has the same problem. Please let me know how to fix this and if the domain is even my problem. My store name is Gutterwit.com. This is the error code "ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR"  Thank you.

Official help docs with what the records should be: https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/domains/add-a-domain/connecting-domains/connect-domain-manual

This page shows what your current records are set to: https://who.is/dns/gutterwit.com

You have 3 records set for Shopify, and they're all wrong:

gutterwit.com A 3600 23.227.38.32
www.gutterwit.com A 60 23.227.38.74
www.gutterwit.com CNAME 3600 e3d84d.myshopify.com

  1. The first A-record (for "gutterwit.com", without the 'www') should be changed to "23.227.38.65"
  2. The second A-record should be deleted/removed
  3. The CNAME record should be changed to "shops.myshopify.com"

Once the above changes have been completed, add the domain back to your store, wait an hour or two, and then the issue should be fixed.

Thank you for helping me out. I have one last question before I can do that though. It doesn't give me an option to edit those things on google domains for my shopify page. Do you know how to edit it? Thank you.

It says that your domain name is with SquareSpace.

Try reaching out to SquareSpace's support for help with editing the DNS records (or else transferring the domain to another provider).

Thanks for walking me through this. I had created the domain on google domains before squarespace bought them out. My domain doesn't show on squarespace yet. Is that the only way I can edit the records because it takes multiple days to transfer. Thank you.

Here's a link to SquareSpace's official help doc on editing domain DNS records for their domains: https://support.squarespace.com/hc/en-us/articles/360002101888-Adding-custom-DNS-records-to-your-Squ...

You'd really need to reach out to SquareSpace though for help with this. Even if you wanted to transfer the domain to Shopify, you'd still probably need their help to do so (as the domain needs to be unlocked, and they need to provide you with a transfer code that you'll copy-and-paste into Shopify).

I apologize if I'm going in circles here but what I meant was I can access my domain on Google Domains right now but not on Square-Space. Do you think I would have to go through the couple day process to transfer to Square-Space or can I edit while it's still on Google Domains?

If you can access your domain through Google, then just make the DNS records there. You wouldn't need to transfer the domain to SquareSpace. I only originally mentioned SquareSpace because you said you didn't have access to the DNS records via Google (so I assumed - probably incorrectly - that the domain was with SquareSpace instead of Google, based on the 'whois' lookup that says SquareSpace).

Anyways, if you can access the domain via Google, then here are the steps for editing DNS records via Google: https://support.google.com/domains/answer/3290350?hl=en

Okay I see what you're saying. Do you know what I would do to edit it though? When I look at it, it doesn't give me an option to edit.

Are you able to provide screenshots of what you see?

I'd honestly rather not go through and blur all my personal info but if that's what's needed I will.
