How to sync a product color metafield as a color filter in filtering menu Canopy Elegant Theme?

Hello,

My goal is to use product metafield color (instead of color variant) in the filtering menu for customer searches. 

I have been able to set up color swatches (codes) and color filters in the Search and Discovery Shopify App. However I can only use color variants one product at a time to get the swatches to display and I want to use color metafield to link with color swatches and display in filtering. Assigned metafield colors do not show up in filtering. Only color variants. Because I can bulk edit metafileds and I have thousands of products which refresh daily I need a solution for this without an app. My theme is Canopy. Elegant sub-style. Please help me. Thank you.
