HTML: help with <div class="nav-item">!

Hi guys,

Not a HTML expert here, so any recommendations would be appreciated. I am creating a blog post and I intend to create a list of contents in a vertical, chronological way, using <div class="nav-item">. I add this after every H2, however, the list is displayed horizontally. I tried putting all the headings in a list, using <br>, however, it does not help. Are you able to suggest a way to organize the headings?
