Hydrogen demo images and text disapearing

Hi! I'm trying to create my first Shopify theme but I am having a bit of trouble. When I create a hydrogen project through npm and run it locally the demo works perfectly. However, as soon as I update the env file with my Shopify domain and api key all the images as well as a large portion of the demo text disappears. I've checked out the docs and looked at several tutorials but haven't found any info on this problem. Any help is appreciated.
