Inventory assistance for calculating invetory based on weight of a variation sold

Hi all

I hope someone can help with this. I am in the process of migrating a client from Woocommerce to Shopify. Obviously it's not simple 🙂, but for the purposes of this I will try to explain my problem fairly simply.

They sell some products which they break down into different weights from larger weights they receive from their supplier. So let's say it is as follows:

They receive 70kg of Product 1.

This is then distributed across Product A & B.
Products A & B have different weights (250g. - 1kg).

With the plugin they currently use on Woo (Attributes Stock) it will reduce the amount on hand of Product 1 buyt a factor of whatever is sold. So, let's say 1 x 500g is sold then it would reduce Product 1 to 69.5kg.

It does this because the setting that has a multiplier based on 0.25 for 250g, .5 for 500g and 1 for 1kg. so it knows to adjust Product 1 by that factor each time one of product A or B's variations is sold.

So. Is there something in the Shopify platform that will do the same?

I don't think they need a hugely complex warehouse or inventory management system as they don't sell on multiple platforms. Nor do I think Shopfy bundles, or Bundleup would work.

Thanka in advance

Hi @TheMktngGeek

Can you elaborate how it will help client to manage inventory, this feature can be developed in a way where all sub-products can be mapped to a product.

We will put the quantity or weight attribute to 7000g or 70kg.

Whenever associated sub-products will be sold attached weight will be reduced from the main product too.

But we are unable how to understand how this will help.

To implement this we will build a custom APP which will perform the steps.

Let me know if this could fulfill your requirement.

Thanks for the reply.

Let me use cheese as an example. They receive 1kg blocks of cheese which they then break down into either cubes or slices.

So both the cubes and the slices use the same block of cheese. But sometimes the demand is greater for one type of cut than the other. So they don't cut a specific percentage of the main block of cheese.

So, what they currently do in Woocommerce is have something like the following:

Cheese block x 10 kg inventory
cubes (by weight) 250g, 500g, 1kg.

Slices (by weight) 250g, 500g, 1kg.

Lets say today they sell 5 x 250g cubes and 1 x 1kg and 4 x 500g crumb the total amount of cheese sold, whether it's cube or slices, is 4.25kg so the main stock level reduces through the day from 10kg to 5.75kg.

But the important thing to remember is that for the purposes of the front end of the store, the two products are different. They just have the same root product.

If this is something you could do, it sounds like we could use it.

We did make a custom app which solve similar issue.
