I'm trying to improve page speed, and I found that these 4 images are still jpeg. I don't know why Shopify is not turning them into webp and I would like to know how I can convert them to webp.

Please share your thoughts on this. thank you

Hi @amin-f,

Thanks for reaching out to the Shopify Community with your question!

Shopify is already automatically converting all suitable images to webp and displaying them to visitors who have compatible browsers, you don’t need to do anything. The image can still be a .png / .jpeg and render as a webp image because webp is an encoding format for images. If you need to be sure what the image encoding is, just save the file. If the encoding used it webp, the saved file will have the extension of webp even if the url says jpeg.

If you find this answer helpful, please mark it as SOLUTION.

Hi Avada,

Thanks for your response. I know Shopify does this automatically. My problem is that all images except  4 are converted to Webp and I want to convert those 4. I don't know why they have not changed automatically and how I can change them. For now, I just changed them to Progressive Jpg but I need to convert them to webp.

Shopify...where is the answer to this? Why does Google Page Speed Insights show images not using WebP format even when the image uploaded is clearly a supported image type? I audit several Shopify sites and find the same issue continuously where it states WebP is not being displayed. So is Google's Chrome Browser they use for Page Speed Insights considered a non-supported browser?

So is the catch here that Google Chrome which is the browser Google is using for Page Speed Insights is not a supported browser? I ask because most Shopify sites fail using WebP today on Google Page Speed insights. So there is either something that has to be configured in Shopify or the version of Google Chrome used for Page Speed Insights is not somehow supported.

Hi,

I am having this same issue. Almost all of my images (loaded as jpg) show as webp on the site, except a few which stubbornly stay as jpg images and so Page Speed complains about them. I have tried deleting and reloading them and they still do not get shown as webp. However, the same image, loaded for a different variant, has, in some cases, changed to webp. It seems odd. Here's an example:

Can you please help. Thank you.

Hi,
I am having the same issue. Have any of you heard anything or found a solution?
I don't know, if it could have anything to do with automatic image delivery update that came back in August 2022.
