Only manual theme updates after code changes?

Hello,

I have made minor changes (added a css file) a theme which is a duplicate of the standard shopify theme. 
Is it correct that there is no way to enable theme updates via the backend and I will always have to update it manually when there is a new version of the original theme?

Why is there no child theme functionality?
