Pages won’t save and content gets put on wrong page

I’ve been trying to create my website and have encountered a few issues. First, when I add content  to a page and then go to a different page, the other content appears on that page. If I try to start over with a page to correct it, it won’t save. I’ve been trying to

problem solve and it keeps assigning wrong content to pages and then other pages just disappear.  Or, I just try to save a new page but the save button doesn’t work.  I’m so frustrated and would really appreciate some help

Hey there! It sounds like you are actually editing the page template in the theme editor, which applies to all pages it is assigned to. When editing page content in the theme editor, you are actually editing (or creating) a template for all content on your store of that nature. So if you wanted to have a banner image in the middle of your about us page, or a newsletter signup on all your blogs, you would add that in through the theme editor and it would apply across all pages of that nature.

Page content is generally input through the page editor in your admin, under Online Store > Pages. The content is added to main area of the page template that you see in the theme editor. You can alternatively create new page templates as well. From the drop down menu at the top of the theme editor, you can select the template style you want to edit and you will see an option to create a new template instead.

Changing the templates assigned to a page/collection/blog can be done within the respective area of the admin. If you go to Online Store > Pages and open a page you have created, you will see the template option in the right hand column. This is the same for other content that supports different templates.

Let me know if you have additional questions about this!

hi shay-

this did not help.  i just want the same look on all my pages using my customized template but it wants me to create a whole new one which i can't seem to duplicate.  Then, every time i go under the page editor under online store and then pages, it shows 3 pages with no content.  If I go back to home page and select my store to customize, the pages are there with the mixed up content and it won't allow me to save anything Ive changed.  Im just stuck and feel I need someone to walk me through this.  I have had a friend who creates shopify websites try to help me and she can't solve the issue either.

Help!

thanks

hi dirk,
thanks, that link worked but now its saying i need to update my account. Ive updated and verified everything I can and it won’t complete. It keeps saying Im missing information but all the info is there. Ive redone it like 3 times. If i try to go back to the help page after ive completed, it says sorry there is a technical problem accessing the help center. So, i have to go back to your email and click on the link to get back to it and Im just in a loop. I just am so frustrated. I just need to complete 2 more pages of my shopify webiste and its taken me almost 3 weeks. I send you guys a message everytime there is a glitch (which is every time I try to get to the next task) and have to wait a day to get a response. Im getting nowhere and Ive been working every night on this for 3 weeks.

Why can’t i just get a support person to do a screen share with me and help me?

I’m about to abandon this whole thing and start over with another website company.

Hey Miranda, thank you for following up with us here. I am really sorry to hear about the difficulties you are experiencing with accessing our support and getting your store setup to go live. Our community support team is not able to directly access merchant accounts and we aren't always able to reply back here in real time. I do want to make sure we get you some more support to get all these issues resolved though. I recommend connecting with us through our social media accounts for more real-time support in troubleshooting this.

You can send us a message/dm on X (Twitter): https://x.com/shopifysupport

Or a private message through Facebook: http://m.me/Shopify

Our social media support team is able to reply back a lot faster then our community team (usually close to real time responses) and we would be happy to troubleshoot this with you more. Feel free to provide a link to this community thread as well for additional context.

If you wish to continue getting support in our community, it would be very helpful if you could share some screenshots of the error messages you are seeing, or issues you are having in setting up your account. Once we can see the issues, it makes it a lot easier to troubleshoot.

For accessing support in our Help Center, please ensure you are not using any VPNs and that your device and your browser are fully up to date. If you are using an older device, the operating system may no longer be supported and could be causing these issues you are experiencing as well.

You need to create custom page templates, and then assign those custom page templates to the respective pages, before editing them within the theme editor.

I can confirm the link that I shared does work. Here are the steps though:

Create a new template:

  • From your Shopify admin, go to Online Store > Themes.
  • Find the theme that you want to edit, and then click Customize.
  • Use the Template drop-down menu to select a template. Click + Create template.
  • Give your template a unique name.
  • Using the Template drop-down menu, select which existing template you want to base your new template on.
  • Click Create template.

Assign new template to page/product/collection:

  • From your Shopify admin, go to the respective page/product/collection
  • On the right-hand side, under templates, click the dropdown and select the new template
  • Click Save.

Once the new template has been created and applied to the respective page/product/collection, you can then go back into the theme editor, navigate to the page/product/collection that you're working on, and add new sections/blocks to it to customize it.
