Possible to pull "Keywords" from one platform as "Tags" on Shopify store?

Hi all, 

We have a commonly used database that stores a ton of metadata about our products that is updated and accessed company-wide, unlike our Shopify store. I was wondering if anyone has experience taking the "tagging" (or in our case, keyword) inputs from one system and using either an API or something else to pull them as "tags" into associated Shopify products in their store. Each product has a corresponding ID that is also in Shopify we could use to match things up. Thank you in advance!
