Product Search Bar Lagging And Deleting As We Type

As of a few days ago, Shopify's behavior for the search bar when on the admin end of the Products page changed so that as you are typing, it is updating the search results much faster than it was before. What is happening though is there is a bit of lag with what you are typing and what it is registering you typing. It is hard to describe to those not having the issue. When typing, the moment you pause for even a fraction of a second, Shopify triggers the search to pull up results in your products. The problem is it takes a second for it to return those results, and if you continue to type while it's pulling results up, you can see the letters being typed in, then it deletes those letters you typed while the query was being run. So you end up with missing letters and a bad search in the end. Imagine trying to type "Mountain" out with a fraction of a second pause to find the 'n' key while typing. It tries to fire off a query for "Mou", but before it returns the results, you manage to type in "ntain". Shopify's first query is now done, let's say while you were typing the "nta" portion, but it deletes the "nta" you just added in while it was running the query, and sees only the remaining "in" leaving you with "Mouin" in the search bar.

This behavior is maddening.

I've chatted online with dozens of other stores, some of which started seeing the behavior at the same time we did. Some are not seeing it though. We are running a mix of different computers, different browsers, different operating systems, and so on. There seems to be no rhyme or reason on who is affected. One group running Windows 11 and Chrome are just fine while another store running Windows 11 and Chrome are not for example. Staff accounts don't seem to matter.

Has anyone experiencing this issue found a solution? We don't want to use the Inventory search bar as that doesn't show prices by default. Products -> search is where we want to be.

Cheers!

I started encountering this over the weekend and am also getting frustrated. I use windows/chrome, but it also does it on microsoft edge.

I am having the same problem, working on Mac.  It lags, then over-writes or misses what is being typed.  I've been updating products for fall and it has slowed me down.  I don't see a lag any place else on the platform.

We are also having this issue as of last week! Very maddening and its only in the product search bar. I hope they fix it soon!

Same issue here on PC an all the browsers. It lags, then deletes characters and over-writes or misses what is being typed...

This is still an issue for us.

Also, they just added a "in:All" text inside the search bar that I can't clickon so when i go to highlight the search bar nothing happens. LoL don't they know that you click usualy just next to the text on the text bar? So to make that unclickable is ... totally not a great ux decision.

Has anyone found a way to switch this off yet?

Its started happening in my phone app (android Shopify admin) and my Macbook Air (chrome web access) it is the most annoying thing I've ever seen in a search bar.

The assumption by the Shopify developers that they know what you wanted to type better than you did is insane. Lets hope they never switch this on for end user webstore search.

Shopify please turn off this function now, I have endless frustration with it and have never had a instance where it helped me.

Not that I'm aware. It's almost 12 months later and still an issue for many folks.

Yup. It's still happening for us over here.

It's so nice they cleaned up that filter out of the search bar though!!!! YAY

Progress IS possible.

They just need to fix the indexing speed of the search bar as it types and get rid of the auto correction for checking typed words. Indexing is fine, just stop messing with things as I type. The interpolation is too slow, and it gets in the way of what I am trying to accomplish. This isn't a grandma typing in words in the ADMIN BACKEND of shopify. ...

Cheers, and thanks shopify for removing that "in:All"

I have been having this same experience since the fall and it truly is maddening. Especially on a busy day with a line.  Sometimes when I stop and restart my ipad it helps but you can’t do that with a line and it eventually reverts back! If anyone finds a fix or workaround please share!  In the meantime how do we let Shopify know that this is an issue?

Can anyone that is experiencing this please chat with support and file a complaint please? I am doing that right now! I think it will help!

I believe I already did this as I started a ticket this morning through the chat support. Is what you are suggesting different than what I did? And also with all due respect is it possible it is happening to more people than you realize? I have had this issue since the fall but only looked on here today. Thank you for replying.

Yes, creating a ticket via our chat support is exactly what I was suggesting. And I fully recognize that it could be happening to more people then we currently know. Without direct reports provided via our support system though we are unable to confirm that or investigate further. Thank you very much for reporting this and please encourage any other merchants you know that are experiencing this to reach out as well.

This has been happening to us for about a year now. It got better a few months ago but now is worse than ever. Every two or three characters we type get deleted. We tried clearing the cache, etc, etc, typing slow, typing fast, different browsers, different computers, I even tried mine at home and it happens no matter what we try.

I tried contacting Shopify support a long time ago and they were no help at all. They acted dumb, like they had no clue what I was talking about and like they didn't understand what I was saying. I said "Surely I'm not the only one with this problem", which they didn't reply to. This is absolutely ridiculous that a huge company like Shopify can let this happen. I'm guessing it's a major issue that they know about but don't want to admit to because it's difficult to fix or they don't know how to fix it?

I am so sorry this is still happening. It finally stopped happening and I am so mad because I don't remember the last thing that actually made it stop doing it. Sadly, it was an annoying series of deleting and re-adding the app, updating apps, ipads, etc. Be persistent and follow whatever dumb directions they give you as eventually something will work. I am so sorry. This is the most frustrating thing.

Oh don't say sorry. Unless you are a software engineer at Shopify lol. It is extremely frustrating considering they have extremely high paid software engineers at Shopify and they don't/can't fix this. I'm glad, Pinkmoongoods, that it stopped happening for you. Hopefully we get lucky like that as well.

Just got a new MacBook Air and it’s happening on that but not my slowerold MacBook Pro. It’s a nightmare - everything quicker on my laptop except this.

Yep! It is such a difficult problem to troubleshoot as there seems to be no commonality between the devices that work well and the ones that suffer. We have experienced it on iOS, Android, and Windows devices. Different browsers. Incognito mode tested to ensure it isn't browser cookies or extensions. Fast computers can suffer while oder ones do not, but some of our old computers also suffer from it too. We just live with it for now until Shopify can finally fix the root cause.

The reply I got from Shopify Support was clear cache etc etc. No recognition that this is an actual problem for Shopify to solve. Really poor. This was the response.

When it comes to lagging on your admin, this is typically an issue with your device or network. We have not been seeing any lag/slowness on our end from the admin. I do have some troubleshooting steps that I would love for you to take here. I understand that you mentioned clearing the cache previously. However, I recommend following these troubleshooting steps to identify the root cause of the issue.

We still notice it here every now and then. It's like the search bar is trying to auto populate the text field, but instead of populating it it deletes instead. Idk, it's hard to describe, but it happens when i'm typing in things into the search bar.

As far as things that are annoying... the menu right above the search bar, if i scroll too high... i end up with that dropdown coving the search bar that i'm trying to get to... xD 😞
so, if i'm hanging out a lot in products, i wrote a script that says if im on that page and I refresh the page it removes that annoying bar so I don't have to worry about the UX interference. IF there is a way to turn that panel OFF let me know. Please.
hoverUXcoversthesearchbar.gif

hey, back in the day the search bar used to be automatically there ready to serve me. Now i need to click F...
If I can get a repeatable backtyping autodeletion scenario, i'll post it.

Sincerely,
Atwood Rope

There is a way to hide that analytics bar. It is SOOOOOOOOOOO annoying! Drove me mad until I saw under the "More Actions" button in the top right area, there was a "Hide analytics bar" option.

This has been an on-again off-again issue for our store. All browsers and machines, on business wifi and home wifi. Definitely something that Shopify should have their developers focus on. I think this demonstrates that Shopify needs more tech people and a portal where store owners can make direct support requests rather than going through chat personnel.
