Store speed score ( How to get better results)

New shopify store owner trying to understand the average score of most Shopify stores?

My current score before truly going live is a meager 44, Sayin it is slower than similar stores.  We are using a customized dawn theme, not overly customized just in places.  There is about 3000 products and most plugins are default, would love to know how to get a better score.

My developer has said in all the stores she has done it always says this and its a way for people to overload the server but i don't know, i want a good-performing store for sure. Any insight into this and where to look for issues is much appreciated , store in question is www.paddyspatches.com

@eldean0

You need to work on the followings as per the screenshot.

oscprofessional_0-1679559847948.png

You need to work on the following points:

  • Theme Upgrade if there is a scope and upgraded theme available
  • Reduce JS Payload.
  • Use Critical CSS.
  • Replace GIFs With Static Images
  • Reduce Large Image Sizes
  • Migrate Tracking Codes To Google Tag Manager
  • Compress Images
  • Limit Third-Party JavaScript & Shopify Apps
  • Preload Web Fonts.
  • I suggest limiting it to one and using a standard web font.

Hello @eldean0,

I am Gina from flareAI app helping Shopify merchants get $5Million+ in sales from Google Search, on autopilot. I am here to support you.

A score of 44 on the Shopify performance test is indeed lower than what you would want for a successful online store. A slow website can lead to poor user experience, which can result in lower conversions and sales.

There are several factors that can affect website performance, such as page size, image optimization, code quality, and server response time.

Here are some tips to help you improve your store's performance.

1. Optimize your images
Large image sizes can significantly slow down your website. Make sure your images are compressed and properly sized for web use. You can use image optimization tools or apps like TinyPNG to help you with this.

2. Minimize apps and plugins
While plugins and apps can add useful features to your store, they can also slow down your website. Remove any apps or plugins that you're not using, and consider consolidating similar functions into a single app.

3. Optimize your code
Make sure your website's code is clean and optimized. Remove any unnecessary code or scripts, and minify your HTML, CSS, and JavaScript files.

4. Monitor your server response time
Your website's performance can also be affected by your server's response time. You can use tools like Pingdom or GTmetrix to monitor your website's response time and identify any server-related issues.

5. Minimize CSS and JavaScript
Large CSS and JavaScript files can slow down your site. You can minimize these files by removing whitespace, comments, and unnecessary code. You can also consider using some tools to automate this process.

6. Always choose a theme that is responsive, fast, and takes minimal time to load the page
If you choose a theme with numerous sliders, fancy animations, advanced navigation systems, etc., will affect your page speed. If your theme is loading slow, consider disabling the theme features you don't need.

It's important to note that some customization of your theme may also affect your website's performance. Make sure any customizations are done in a way that doesn't impact performance.

Overall, improving your website's performance is an ongoing process that requires continuous monitoring and optimization

I took a look at your pagespeed score and found the following you should focus on:

1. Looks like your main banners (for example paddyspatches.com/cdn/shop/files/mobile-banner.jpg is slowing down the site (comment is Largest Contentful Paint element is large and slow) - you should lossless compress the image and then add to code to preload it)

2. The main banner imagea are lazyloaded but should not be because they are in the viewport. You should remove the lazy load

3. Take your images, lossless compress them and reupload (especially banners and main product images)

4. Remove elements on page - most people dont scroll so low
