Tech + Subscription Two-Step Checkout Process

I need help figuring out if the checkout configuration I want to do is possible! I'm open to switching apps / payment processors / whatever to make this happen.

My client sells in-home hydroponic garden systems that are several hundred dollars. Purchasers also need to sign up for a monthly subscription that includes plants and nutrients. I want to set it up so they can purchase the system and sign up for the subscription in one transaction ... but here's the issue. I want them to be able to finance the system (we use Affirm right now) without also financing the subscription payment.

The way I'm trying to do it is have a two-step checkout process where, once they add the system to their cart, they're taken to a screen where they select the subscription they want (month-to-month, 3-month, or 6-month). Then they're able to check out with one transaction but signing up for Affirm just for the system - purchasing the subscription directly from us.

Is this possible? Thoughts? Workarounds? The developer I'm working with told me it's possible but we're running into issues and Affirm support is being exactly 0 help.
