Why are my shipping rates loading so slowly at checkout?

Our site seems to work quickly enough, but I noticed this morning when doing a test transaction *very* slow load rates for the shipping options at checkout. We use Canada Post and connect directly to it to use our own rates they give us, I am not sure if that is the issue? We also however have a series of rates that are not dependent on Canada Post (i.e., we manually created the rates, including free local delivery based on postal code) but these are not loading any quicker. By slow i mean upwards of thirty seconds for the rates to appear ... 

Advice as to how to hunt down what is causing this problem?
