Why can't I add a column for images in my Spotlight theme?

I have tried several themes and for some reason I can not get a column on the right side to insert images.  I am in Spotlight right now......Everything on the left opens up just fine. I am on the 13 version but my screen does not match up with the tutorials I have watched and they are on Spotlight as well.
