Just set up a new shop and trying to customize the theme. It works well for the first couple edits, but then begins to lag until it becomes so slow that it crashes. This happens consistently after about 5 edits. It is making it very time consuming and difficult to get this shop set up. I am using google chrome on my macbook. I have not changed any code and have only been doing very basic edits like filling in text and selecting images. Has anyone else had this experience or know of anyway to fix it?
Hi, @wychburyave!
Welcome to Shopify Community. My name is Olivia and I work here.
Thanks for sharing your question with our network. I did some research to see if I could find any similar reports, but our system logs do not show any issues with the theme editor. The theme editor is reserved by our system, so any code changes should not impact the functionality even if you had made some changes. I also went ahead and ran several tests, but was not able to replicate your issue.
Together, let's make sure your software is up-to date. Can you confirm the following for me:
With that narrowed down, let's go ahead and rule out any local issues as well. Let's have you try the following troubleshooting steps:
This can help us figure out what else might be going on to cause your theme editor to crash and lag. If the issue continues to persist, I will definitely want to take a look at your store and see if I can replicate the issue on there specifically. If there's any other information you can give me that you think could be relevant, please share that with me here as well.
I look forward to connecting,

I'll just add in here as well, I constantly get Theme editor crashes. Multiple browsers, devices, locations, Shopify themes & accounts. It's pretty consistently bad, but I've just learned to live with it.
Until they improve the admin theme editor we all just have to live with it unfortunately.
Or use a different dev workflow, and deploy your themes 🙂
Thanks for sharing your experience on our thread, @KieranR.
I definitely want to dig deeper to provide feedback to our devs, and perhaps recommendations to improve your experience. You mentioned you run into multiple theme editor crashes on different browsers and devices - is it consistently after a certain number of edits?
Are you running other programs simultaneously as well? If so, which ones?
Any other details you can provide, or even a video reference of what you see would be super appreciated to pass along internally to help us improve our user experience.
I look forward to your reply,

Yes, indeed I've had the same issues. I have 2 stores, one crashes all the time (it has a music player) the other one doesn't. They are both the same theme (an actual duplicate) and I cant edit anything for more than a few minutes (simple stuff like text or sections etc). It's only in the theme "customize" areas.
So for a test I started using Firefox and the issues went away. So for now I'll use firefox until Chrome can get the stuff together. It's clearly a Chrome issue. Switch to Firefox and see if you're able to get more done. Worked for me
Thanks for adding your feedback to this thread, @u3dme71!
That's a very strange experience, can I ask if this continues after you update your browser and clear current cache and cookies? Does it persist in incognito mode as well?
I'm also curious to learn which version of Chrome you are using, or if it has persisted across several versions.
I look forward to your reply,

2023, different year same issue.
Super glad they are spending their money on Spotify ads instead of fixing this.
