Why is GA4 reporting multiple purchase events for a single transaction?

Why is GA4 reporting multiple purchase events for a single transaction?

Hello good people!

I am having issues with the convertion tracking on our page: https://golfsenteret.no/

I have a strange issue where GA4 is reporting 2-4 purchase events on a purchase, which is messing with our convertion rate tracking in GA4. I first thought that the script was firing multiple times, but running through the debug-tool in GA4, the purchase event was only registered once, but GA4 is still reporting 3 events.

I did however notice that during the checkout process, pageview was firing twice on shipping, payment & complete for some reason, but no on inititale_checkout. Though, the purchase event was still only registered once.

GA4 is freshly installed and set up using the Google app in Shopify. I am really scratching my head around this, and cannot find any clear solution to this issue.

Looking in GA4, i can see that the value on engangement -> conversion repports are corrrect vs. the order recieved, but the convertions is wrong. This is 1 order, not 3 orders:

Even more strangely, looking in the convertions overview in GA4, it is repporting the same wrong event count "3", but a completly different value which is totaly incorrrect:

Anyone have any ideas why this is occuring, and how to correct it? It is very infuriating to solve this issue!

Potentially you have the GTAG installed manually and via an app.

For example if you are using Google Channel, do not self install the tag as well.

Hello @EmmanuelFlossie !

Thank you for your reply. I cannot find any duplicates of the script when looking at the source on the page, and if that were the case i assume we also would see duplicated events on GA4 trough the debug tool?

Hi @Joachimgolf for example if you use GTM, and add the code, it will not be visible in the source code.

You would see double events in GA4 yes.

Hello @EmmanuelFlossie !

Just looked over the source code again, and i can see that both the GTM & Trekkie refrences the GA4-code. I am not 100% sure what Trekkie is in a shopify sense, and i am not sure where Trekkie is firing from within Shopify.

But this could be the issue if both "trekkie" & "GTM" is firing the same code at the same time?

We use both the official facebook & google apps, and within google both the GA4 & G-Ads is set up iwhtin the app. So i would then assume that the GTM that is running is causing the duplicates?

That sounds correct.
