Why is my dropdown menu blank and how do I can I let the standard sort option be "Date, New to Old"?

Hey, 

first of all I am on Refresh 13.0.1.

I am strongly assuming that the text and background color and text color are the same, I would have to edit that somewhere in the code, anyone know where exactly or how to find it? And I know I can jus create a collection with the according items and sort by newest but that would not allow my customers all the other filter and sorting options. There has to be a way to sort "Date, new to old" as default instead of featured, right?
