Did you ever figure out a solution here? We're also seeing this on multiple customer stores - the images are automatically being served with content-type: images/avif and that causes safari not to display them correctly

This type of error can happen when the JS build system isn't configured to support Ecmascript modules. It might be a better idea to raise an issue on the Hydrogen github repo, if this happens using the default template!
