This subject should get more attention. The question was raised more than two years ago and there is still no update or solution for this from Shopify. It's such a basic requirement to be able to fill customers metafields via the POS app.
It's the same when using a collection metafield of the type "Collection (list)," which is even more problematic because you can't avoid having the collection in the URL. It consistently occurs only on the first load that the collection in the URL app...
