I think the temporary solution we will use is to have say 1000 "on hold" as the new "zero" so 999 on hold represents  -1    ....but this prevents us from being able to stop orders going through when stock hits 1000 (the new zero) in defined situation...
Yep we need negative inventory values too!!!  So much so we've had to take out store offline until this is resolved or we can find a workaround.  All Shopify support can suggest is to upload a CSV file with a negative inventory every time we wish to ...

Beana - my understanding is that its not something that Google can solve.  Unless you mark custom product = no as suggested in the thread then the Google Barcode field entry doesnt get included in the Shopify feed (as the GTIN that Google require).  ...
