Can we serve images and video from a remote server - E.G AWS

Our new app is in beta test.
We have an issue.
To upload a single product data with 5 images plus one product video to a client's Shopify store
takes circa 3 minutes.

This is not workable, imagine if a Shopify store wanted to add 20,000 of our products to their Shopify store,
it would take 42 days to list.

Is it the images and video that are causing the upload to Shopify delays?
Can we serve the images and video from a common remote server e.g AWS
If we were just uploading text, could we do it via a CSV and do hundreds of product records in seconds?

What are we missing?

Care to point me to some information on how I enable and use external servers for images and video.
If you upload product via CSV and provide an URL to the product image, then Shopify collects the image and serves it from Shopify servers from that point onwards.

We are hoping to be able to serve the images from AWS on each product call.
