SplitOrders: Need Customer Order to split Line Items into Separate Orders

Situation: Consumer creates a single order with 2 items--Item A is fulfilled by Company A (my company), Item B is fulfilled by Company B.

Company A and Company B both will use ShipStation to Fulfill--I'd like to be able to 'assign' Item A line item to Company A user for fulfillment and Item B line item to Company B user for fulfillment.

In short, how can a single consumer generated shopify order be 'split' into two orders for fulfillment by two separate fulfillment sources?

Hi @stylernau

Are you using the fulfillment app?

Hi there, thank you for your reply.  We're not using the fulfillment app, is that the same as "Custom Fulfillment in the Shipping and Delivery settings or something else?

@stylernau  I don't think you need to split the order into separate orders, I think you just need to assign different locations to each product.

Here's how you would do it manually:

1) Make sure your store is not set to auto fulfill all orders (in Settings > Checkout)

2) When the order comes in with those 2 different items, in the order details page click the options button on the line item and change location to the other location

3) Now request the fulfillment, it will go to the other location

If you want to automate that (or if what you're trying to do isn't possible manually), check out Order Automator, and reach out if you need any help (I'm the lead developer). We have various solutions for workflows like you described, and also do custom features if something's not in the app already.

Hi @stylernau

You could use the SplitOrder app to set up a rule that would 'split' items from a single order into two separate orders if the items are fulfilled from different locations.

So in your example, if a single order contains two items, with item 1 fulfilled by Company A and item 2 by Company B, it would 'split' the items into separate orders so they can be fulfilled separately.

The SplitOrder app is integrated to ShipStation, so you could set up the rule so the two 'split' orders are automatically created in ShipStation.

Looks like Shopify can't do this natively.
