Which Shopify platform to use

Hi Everyone - Before I begin my store, I need an answer to this question.... I live in Canada but my store will be using suppliers in the US and will use drop shipping from those suppliers. My question is, with this set up, should I join under the shopify.com or the shopify.ca platform?  And given that I will be selling in the US, what about taxes?

Tx in advance for your help!!

Hello @dhuning

Join under and Shopify CA and pay taxes as per CA regulations.   Sell to anywhere in the world.

Hi @dhuning,

Nick here from Shopify.

For this particular scenario, it wouldn't necessarily matter which Shopify platform you set up with, once you add your business address location as being in Canada it would register you as Canadian. All stores pay their Shopify subscription in USD so that wouldn't change much either.

Regarding taxes, your best bet would be to set up your business in Canada and pay Canadian taxes since that's where your business would be registered. Shopify has a guide going through all the steps you need to take when setting up your taxes being based in Canada. You can see the web page with a general Canadian tax guide here and the guide for setting up Canadian taxes here

Are there any other questions you are wondering about regarding getting set up? Let me know!

All the best, Nick

Hi Nick - thanks for your reply and the links :). I was thinking...after
posing my question, that would it really matter which platform I used since
I plan on moving to somewhere outside of No. America sometime in the next 3
years? Same scenario- US suppliers, and drop shipping.
What do folks living in Australia or Europe do?

Hi @dhuning,

In this case, it's completely up to you if you want to move your business address and legalities to a different country, you can then change your address and details in your store admin. Regardless of which .com, .ca, or whichever countries domain you sign up from, it's your business address and details in your admin which would be aspects you need to change. You can see the steps on how to do this from the help guide Shopify has on this here

Thanks Nick - If I understand your explanations, there is really no
difference in the two platforms re setup/look/options etc..... .com vs .ca
? I looked at each and other than a different color on the landing page,
they both look the same....

You've been very helpful! :)
